First time Off Road!

A Day that Changed the Path of My Life

This was the day my Jeep Life morphed from daily driver to weekend warrior. I would soon come to find my new passion would become off-roading. Little did I know that day how it would completely change my life. My Jeep and off-roading would take me on so many adventures to amazing places.

Check out My First Time Off-road video on YouTube.

My First Time on the Trails

I got up early to embark on a three-hour drive to Pennsylvania. My destination was Rausch Creek Off-road Park. I had arranged a one-on-one off-road driving instruction session.

I was eager to learn more about my Jeep and its features, and finally get out on the trails to learn how to drive off-road. It was something I had never experienced and had no idea what to expect.

Nervous Excitement

My nerves on edge and my tummy filled with anxious butterflies, I walked up to the window to check in. My instructor, Kyle, was there to greet me. He set my nerves at ease with his easy going welcoming personality. We wasted no time and began the training. I was thrilled when I finally engaged 4-wheel low and drove a few circles in a dirt lot to get a feel for my Jeep's capabilities.

Off-Roading 101 with Kyle

Kyle is a well-educated and seasoned professional trainer. He is knowledgeable about the capabilities of my Jeep. He explained them in terms I understood. Plus, it helped that I was an experienced driver in the snow and ice.

An Amazing Day!

Facing My Fears

As I tackled the first incline, I was nervous about tipping over. However, after seeing a picture of the incline, I realized it wasn't as bad as it felt. Something I remind myself still to this day.  I continued to learn, navigating washouts, hills, mud, and rocks without damaging my Jeep.

Traversing the Trails

Kyle took me and my Jeep through wash outs, up and down hills, through the mud and over rocks. I didn't even damage my Jeep at all. I did hear some clanks and bangs -- only four -- so I think I did pretty good.

Mastering the Hill Descent Control

One of the coolest things I learned was about the Hill Descent Control button. I was amazed at what my Jeep could do without my help, and it gave Knight Rider's Kit a run for its money.

First Time Water Forging

Kyle even took me through the center of a pond, which was a scary feeling, but I trusted my Jeep. I was reminded that my Jeep is not just a toy, but also my mommy vehicle for daily tasks.

Water forging is one of the Jeep 4x4 Trail Rated Badge tests.

Manual Automatic Transmission Magic

Another feature I learned to use was the manual automatic transmission, also called autostick. This is second nature to me since I grew up driving a manual transmission with a clutch.

This post will show you What is Autostick and How to Use Autostick

At the time, I wasn't ready for more difficult rockier trails. It was a fantastic day and I was eager to take another class so I could venture out on my own.   I didn't know where it would lead me at the time but it was all an amazing journey.

Check out all my other Adventures and see the amazing journey I have been on since this first day.

Bucket List: Warrior Dash Completed

Reflections of an Amazing Day!

Jeep Momma showing she's ready for the race

Saturday morning greeted me with a blend of nerves and determination. The prospect of racing solo, as a 40-something-year-old woman, stirred apprehension within me. Doubts clouded my mind about handling the obstacles that lay ahead. Yet, I repeated to myself: quitting was not an option. Running and completing this race solo became a personal mission, a testament to my capabilities.

Check out my blog page on How to Crafting Your Own Bucket List

Team of One: Rediscovering Independence

Unlike most participants, who raced alongside teammates or partners, I stood as the entirety of "Team: Me, Myself, and I." The solitary pursuit symbolized a journey toward rediscovering my inner strength and independence. Conquering the race solo represented more than a physical feat; it was a declaration of self-reliance regained amid life's twists and turns.

A Free Beer after finishing the race awaited me.

Testing Limits: A Trail of Endurance

The race course emerged as a testing ground for endurance and resilience. The initial mile led me into the dense woods, navigating treacherous hills that seemed to ascend endlessly. While others succumbed to fatigue and walked, I persevered, transitioning from a run to a determined jog. Each step propelled me forward, even as the trail morphed into a quagmire of mud and muck.

Finding Joy in Adversity

Amid the collective grumbles echoing along the trail, I found solace in the adventure unfolding before me. Traversing the muddy terrain, I reflected on the resilience of soldiers who braved far greater challenges. If they could endure, then surely I could conquer this muddy mile with ease.

Confronting Fears: Triumph Over Heights

The ultimate trial awaited in the final mile, replete with obstacles that tested my resolve, particularly my fear of heights. With each climbing wall conquered and each obstacle surmounted, I confronted my apprehensions head-on. The pinnacle of the challenge lay in a narrow beam suspended 25 feet above a ravine, with only two ropes for support. Drawing a deep breath, I pressed forward, refusing to yield to fear.

Triumph Amidst Mud and Milestones

As I crawled through the final stretch of mud, a surge of exhilaration swept over me. The journey neared its conclusion, leaving me exhilarated yet yearning for more. The race had become a testament to my resilience, a reminder of the depths of endurance within me. With newfound confidence, I eagerly embraced the prospect of future challenges, signing up for the next race. I would end up running several 5k's and eventually checked My First 10K off my list.

7 Metabolism Boosting Tips

As You Grow Older

Metabolism is the process your body uses to turn food into energy. A faster metabolism means your body burns more calories, which makes it easier to maintain or lose weight. A slower metabolism makes it harder.

As women, our metabolism naturally changes with age. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck—it just means you need to adjust how you eat, move, and take care of yourself. In this post, I’ll share both the science behind metabolism shifts and practical lifestyle tips I’ve tried to keep my energy strong over the years.

(Educational info only; not medical advice. Talk to a healthcare professional for personal guidance.)

How Women’s Metabolism Changes with Age

  • 20s: Muscle and bone mass are at their peak.

  • 30s: Mitochondria (your cells’ energy producers) become less efficient.

  • 40s: Estrogen production declines, slowing metabolism further.

  • 50s and beyond: Less activity + lower hormone levels reduce lean muscle mass and bone density.

Pro Tip: You can’t stop the aging process, but you can adapt with exercise, nutrition, and habits that support your metabolism. Self-care is key when growing older.

Close up picture of myself using weights to get healthy again.

Everyday Habits That Boost Metabolism

Here are some of the strategies I’ve found helpful in my own health journey:

1. Eat a Balanced Breakfast

Skipping breakfast can slow metabolism. Choose protein + fiber to start your day.

2. Caffeine in Moderation

Coffee or green tea can provide a mild metabolism boost thanks to caffeine.

3. Stay Hydrated (Cold Water Helps)

Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Cold water may give a slight calorie-burning effect.

4. Prioritize Protein

Protein helps maintain lean muscle and increases the thermic effect of food (burning more calories during digestion).

5. Eat Dark Leafy Greens

Spinach, kale, and broccoli provide iron and nutrients that support energy metabolism.

6. Add Chili Peppers

Capsaicin (found in chili peppers) can give a short-term metabolism boost.

7. Get Quality Sleep

Poor sleep disrupts hormones like leptin and ghrelin, which regulate hunger and metabolism.

 More Metabolism-Boosting Tips

  • Calcium-Rich Snacks
Yogurt or milk in the afternoon may support fat metabolism.

  • Eat Organic When Possible
Chemicals in pesticides may disrupt thyroid function and energy metabolism. If you can’t go fully organic, check the Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen lists for where it matters most.

  • Strength Train Slowly

  • When lowering weights, count to three. Slower resistance training engages muscles longer, boosting metabolism.

  • Mix Up Cardio Intensity
Add intervals of high-intensity sprints to walking, biking, or running. Intervals increase calorie burn even after you stop.

FAQ: Metabolism and Aging

Q: Why does metabolism slow as we age?
A: Primarily due to loss of muscle mass and decreased activity, with hormones playing a role.

Q: Can food really boost metabolism?
A: Certain foods (protein, chili peppers, green tea) have a small effect, but the biggest impact comes from overall healthy eating + exercise.

Q: Is strength training more effective than cardio for metabolism?
A: Both help, but strength training builds muscle, which burns more calories at rest. That makes it especially important as we age.

Q: How much sleep do I need for healthy metabolism?
A: Aim for 7–9 hours per night. Consistent, quality sleep helps regulate hormones that affect weight and energy.

I’ve learned through my health challenges (including my fatty liver diagnosis) that metabolism isn’t just about “burning calories.” It’s about creating habits—nutrition, exercise, hydration, and rest—that support your body long-term.

You can’t stop aging, but you can outsmart it by choosing daily habits that fuel your energy and keep you strong.

Simple Skin Care Naturally

It’s Not Too Late to Start Taking Care of Your Skin

Getting older stinks! Our bodies just aren’t the same as when we were younger. If I only knew then what I know now, I would’ve taken better care of my skin back in my 20s and 30s.

The truth is: it’s never too late to start. With the right habits—hydration, clean eating, natural skin care, and sun protection—you can protect your skin and keep it healthier as you age.

My Skin Cancer Wake-Up Call (Update 2025)

In the summer of 2025, I had basal cell carcinoma cut out of my forehead. It was a scary but important reminder that skin care isn’t just about beauty—it’s about health.

Now, I have to be very mindful of my skin, especially on my face. Sun protection and avoiding harsh chemicals aren’t optional anymore—they’re essential. If sharing my story helps even one person start protecting their skin earlier, it’s worth it.

(For medical advice about skin cancer or treatment, always consult a dermatologist. This is just my personal journey.)

The Foundation of Healthy Skin

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. What you eat, drink, and put on your skin matters just as much as what you put in your body. Here are the habits that have made the biggest difference for me:

  • Healthier, Clean Eating – Focus on whole foods, fewer processed ingredients.

  • Hydrate – Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day.

  • Limit Chemicals – Choose natural skincare and personal products.

  • Exercise – Movement improves circulation, which nourishes skin cells.

Pro Tip: I noticed a huge change when I began eating more raw fruits and veggies and cutting back on processed foods. My skin looked brighter, and I felt better overall.

 Reading Labels Matters

close up label of a skin care product
Read the labels

If a product’s ingredient list looks like a chemistry experiment, think twice. I learned this lesson when my son had recurring canker sores. His dentist suggested switching to a toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a common foaming agent. Once we switched, his sores disappeared.

That was my wake-up call to simplify the products I used for myself, too. Now I stick to basic, natural ingredients whenever possible.

Natural Skin Care Tips

  • Exfoliate (but don’t overdo it)

  • Dry body brushing to boost circulation

  • Hydrate your skin with natural oils and moisturizers

  • DIY masks for tightening & refreshing

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Eat raw foods for antioxidants

  • Strength training & calisthenics for circulation

  • Massage to reduce tension and improve flow

  • Avoid harsh soaps

  • Daily sun protection (SPF 30+)

  • Add Vitamin C & Retinol gradually

Keep It Simple: My Routine

The beauty industry makes skincare seem complicated. Toners, tonics, serums, sprays—it’s overwhelming. Here’s how I keep it simple and natural.

Morning

  • Cleanse: Just splash with warm water if you cleansed properly the night before.

  • Moisturize: Apply a natural moisturizer to keep skin hydrated.

  • Sun Protection: The most important step! Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day.

Evening

  • Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly—soap residue clogs pores.

  • Exfoliate: 2–3 times per week to remove dead skin cells.

  • Moisturize: Reapply before bed to lock in hydration.

  • Mask: Use a natural mask once or twice a week for tightening.

FAQ: Natural Skin Care

Q: Do natural products really work?
A: Yes, many natural ingredients (like aloe, coconut oil, and green tea) provide hydration and antioxidants without harsh chemicals.

Q: How can I prevent wrinkles naturally?
A: Hydration, sunscreen, a balanced diet, and consistent sleep make the biggest difference. Expensive creams won’t undo neglect.

Q: What’s the #1 skin care mistake people make?
A: Skipping sunscreen. Sun damage is the leading cause of premature aging and skin cancer.

Q: Do I need all those extra products—toners, sprays, serums?
A: Not necessarily. A simple routine—cleanse, moisturize, protect—covers most people’s needs. Extras are optional.

If I could go back, I’d start protecting my skin decades earlier. But it’s never too late to begin. By eating clean, staying hydrated, exercising, and protecting your skin from the sun, you can keep it healthier for years to come.

My skin cancer diagnosis reminded me that natural, simple care is powerful—and it’s about more than looking good. It’s about living well.

What is the Jeep Wave?

Understanding the Jeep Wave: History, Meaning, and Etiquette

Owning a Jeep Wrangler isn’t just about having a capable off-road vehicle—it's about being part of an extraordinary community. One unique tradition cherished by Jeep enthusiasts worldwide is the Jeep Wave, a symbolic gesture of unity and camaraderie among Jeep drivers.

What Exactly Is the Jeep Wave?

The Jeep Wave is a friendly greeting exchanged between Jeep owners, particularly drivers of Wranglers, CJs, and occasionally XJs. Typically, when two Jeeps pass on the road, one driver initiates a wave, and the other returns it. It symbolizes mutual respect and a shared enthusiasm for the Jeep lifestyle.

Seize the Moment!

Embracing Simplicity in a Fast-Paced World

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a busy life, pressured to keep up, or disconnected from the simple joys that really matter, my guide explains:

  • How to slow down and enjoy life

  • Why simplicity matters for emotional well-being

  • Practical tips to savor everyday moments

  • A personal story about choosing family time over busyness

Why It’s So Easy to Lose Sight of What Matters

In today’s tech-driven world, life moves fast. Apps ping, schedules fill up, and there’s constant pressure to keep up with everyone else. Many of us drift through the days without truly experiencing them.

As someone who has lived a hectic, competitive lifestyle, I know how easy it is to get swept up in doing rather than being. That’s why choosing simplicity became one of the most important shifts I’ve ever made.

My Journey Toward a Simpler, More Intentional Life

Life is a priceless gift but it’s easy to take it for granted when you’re racing through it.

Several years ago, I recognized how overwhelmed I’d become. Instead of feeling fulfilled, I felt rushed and disconnected. I craved peace, presence, and the freedom to enjoy my life again.

So I made a conscious decision to slow down

  • I created space for quiet moments.

  • I traded multitasking for mindfulness.

  • I prioritized memories over productivity.

These small changes brought me more joy, gratitude, and clarity than I expected.

👉 Want practical ways to simplify your life?
Check out my post: How to Simplify Your Life it’s full of easy, actionable steps.

Snow Sledding Trail Time with Kids

Snow Sledding, Trails, and Choosing Family Time

One of the biggest reasons I embraced simplicity was my kids. Time was moving too fast, and I didn’t want to miss it.

One winter afternoon, instead of tackling the never-ending to-do list, I chose something different: I built a snow-sledding course with my son.

We shoveled, shaped, slid, and laughed until our faces hurt. That spontaneous choice created one of my favorite memories.

This moment reinforced a motto I live by: Family time comes first. The to-do list can wait.

As a mom, a Jeeper, and someone who’s spent years learning to balance passion and parenting, these simple moments matter more than anything.

Although change can be difficult, it often leads to new opportunities and personal growth. Perseverance in making small, everyday changes is key.

How You Can Rediscover the Simple Joys of Life

You don’t need a big life overhaul to enjoy life more. Start small:

  • Say yes to spontaneous fun

  • Reduce distractions

  • Schedule unplugged time

  • Get outside, breathe fresh air

  • Create instead of consume

  • Put relationships above routines

For more ideas, here’s a resource I love: 25 Ways to Enjoy Life — great for quick inspiration.

FAQs: Slowing Down, Simplifying, &  Enjoying Life

1. Why is it important to slow down in today’s fast-paced world?

2. How can I simplify my life if I’m constantly busy?

Start with small, manageable changes:

  • Cut back on nonessential commitments

  • Create digital boundaries

  • Reduce clutter (mental and physical)

  • Prioritize what truly matters
My How to Simplify Your Life post gives simple steps anyone can start today.

3. What does "embracing simplicity" really mean?

It means focusing on what brings value, peace, and joy instead of chasing constant productivity or comparison. It’s about living intentionally rather than reactively.

4. How do I make time for family when my schedule is full?

You don’t “find” time you make time. That often means letting go of perfection, saying no to things that drain you, and remembering that your relationships matter more than your to-do list.

5. What are some easy ways to enjoy the moment?

Try these quick resets:

  • Step outside for 5 minutes

  • Put your phone away during meals

  • Start a gratitude list

  • Watch a sunset with no distractions

  • Choose one small daily joy (coffee, music, fresh air, a hug)

6. How can I stop comparing myself to others?

Limit social media, focus on your own goals, celebrate your wins, and remind yourself that what you see online is only a highlight reel. Simplicity helps shift your focus back to what matters in your own life.

7. What if slowing down feels uncomfortable or unproductive?

That’s normal. Most of us are conditioned to stay busy. Slowing down takes practice — but with time, it becomes grounding, peaceful, and life-giving.

Your life doesn’t need to be perfect to be joyful. It just needs to be present.

Start with one small choice today a break, a breath, a moment with someone you love. These are the memories you’ll cherish years from now.

Why Flexibility Matters for Jeepers

My Sciatic Nerve Wake-Up Call

Short Answer:

If you struggle with sciatic nerve pain, tight hips, or stiffness after wheeling, stretching can help you stay mobile, reduce discomfort, and keep adventuring longer. This post shares my personal journey with sciatic pain, what caused it, and the stretches that helped me get back to an active Jeep lifestyle.

How Sciatic Pain Stopped Me in My Tracks

A few years ago, I trained for months to run my very first 10K. I was excited, committed, and ready. But two days before the race, a strange numbness and pain crept down my leg. I ignored it because, well… I had a race to run.

I pushed through and ran the 10K anyway.

Later I learned I wasn’t dealing with simple muscle tightness.
It was sciatic nerve pain.

That experience became a turning point not just for running, but for how I take care of my body as I wheel, hike, climb into my lifted Jeep, and live an active outdoor life.

At this age (and with the off-roading lifestyle we love), flexibility isn’t optional. It’s essential.

Running in my first 10K
Running my first 10K

What I Learned: Sciatic Pain Isn’t Just “Getting Older”

From my personal experience (and a lot of research), I discovered my pain was related to Piriformis Syndrome a condition where the tiny piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve.

When this muscle tightens, it can trigger:

  • Pain

  • Tingling

  • Numbness down the back of the leg

  • Stiffness in the hip and glutes

These symptoms can make everyday things difficult and they can definitely affect Jeep life:

  • Climbing into a lifted Jeep

  • Walking obstacles on the trail

  • Sitting for long overland drives

  • Sleeping in a rooftop tent or on uneven ground

Everything becomes harder when your sciatic nerve is angry.

Picture of the back of the body showing the Sciatic Nerve
Sciatic Nerve

Why Flexibility Matters So Much for Jeepers and Off-Roaders

Off-roading isn’t just sitting behind the wheel. It requires mobility:

  • Strong hips to climb in/out of your rig

  • Loose hamstrings for hiking obstacles

  • A flexible lower back for long trail days

  • Core stability for uneven terrain

  • Comfortable movement after long drives

Many Jeepers don’t realize how much their lifestyle depends on healthy muscles until pain shows up.

For me, stretching became the difference between being active… and sitting on the sidelines.

The Benefits of Stretching (Backed by Research & Experience)

Stretching consistently can:

  • Increase muscle flexibility

  • Improve daily mobility

  • Reduce tightness from long drives

  • Increase joint range of motion

  • Promote better circulation

  • Support posture and reduce back pain

  • Relieve tension (especially stress-related tightness)

For someone who wheels often or sits at a desk between adventures these benefits matter.

My goal now is simple: Stretch every major muscle group at least twice a day.

Proper Stretching Tips (What Works for Me)

Warm Up First

Stretching cold muscles increases the risk of strain.
A 5-minute walk or gentle movement helps.

Hold Each Stretch 30–60 Seconds

Short, rushed stretching isn’t effective.

Don’t Bounce

Bouncing can cause micro-tears and more tightness.

Avoid Pain

Stretching should feel like a gentle pull not sharp pain.

Breathe and Relax

Holding your breath increases muscle tension.

Stretch Before & After Activity

  • Light warm-up stretching

  • Deep stretching post-workout or post-adventure

Sciatic Nerve stretch sitting down

The Stretches That Helped My Sciatic Pain

These are the stretches that helped me regain movement and get back to Jeep life. (This is based on my personal experience not medical advice.)

Sciatic Nerve Stretch — Lying on Back

Pull one knee toward your chest and gently stretch the glute and lower back.

Piriformis Stretch

Great for targeting the muscle that often triggers sciatic pain.

Front Hip Stretch

Helpful if long trail days or long drives tighten your hip flexors.

Hamstring Stretch

These muscles directly influence sciatic tension.

Sciatic Nerve stretches lying on back.

You can do many of these right at your desk or while working on your computer. A couple of minutes makes a big difference.

My Goal Moving Forward

Right now, my biggest priority is keeping my hip, leg, and glute muscles loose so I can:

  • Climb in and out of my Jeep

  • Stay pain-free on long drives

  • Hike obstacles

  • Keep exploring new trails

  • Continue living an active Jeep Momma life

Stretching every day has become as important as airing down my tires before hitting the trail.

FAQs About Sciatic Pain, Flexibility & Jeep Life

1. Can off-roading make sciatic pain worse?

Yes, long hours sitting in the Jeep, bouncing over terrain, and climbing in/out of lifted rigs can aggravate tight hips and the lower back.

2. What causes sciatic nerve pain?

Common causes include muscle tightness, piriformis syndrome, herniated discs, and prolonged sitting. For me, it was piriformis syndrome.

3. Are these stretches safe?

These stretches helped me personally, but everyone’s body is different. If you have severe symptoms, it’s always best to talk to a healthcare professional.

4. How often should I stretch?

Daily stretching (even 3–5 minutes at a time) helps maintain mobility and prevent flare-ups — especially if you wheel often.

5. Can stretching help with Jeep stiffness after long trail days?

Yes! Stretching increases circulation, reduces tightness, and helps you recover faster after long days behind the wheel.

Flexibility isn’t just for runners, athletes, or people who do yoga.
It’s for anyone who wants to stay active, adventurous, and pain-free especially Jeepers who love long drives, tough trails, and exploring new places.

Sciatic pain taught me an important lesson: Taking care of your body now means enjoying the adventure longer.
