Frequently Asked Questions: Protecting Public Lands from Closure

Why are off-road trails being closed?

Trails are often closed due to environmental damage, misuse, lack of maintenance funding, or pressure from regulatory agencies. Poor trail etiquette, off-trail travel, and failure to follow land-use rules can accelerate closures.

What is the Blue Ribbon Coalition and why does it matter?

The Blue Ribbon Coalition is a national nonprofit that advocates for responsible recreation and protects access to public lands. They work directly with land managers, lawmakers, and recreation groups to prevent unnecessary trail closures.

How does Tread Lightly! help keep trails open?

Tread Lightly! principles reduce environmental impact by encouraging responsible behavior like staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife, and leaving no trace. When off-roaders demonstrate responsible use, land managers are less likely to restrict access.

Does joining an off-road club really make a difference?

Yes. Local and national off-road clubs provide organized representation, volunteer labor for trail maintenance, and a unified voice when land-use decisions are made. Strength in numbers matters when advocating for access.

What can I do personally to protect public lands?

You can:

  • Support advocacy organizations

  • Follow trail rules and closures

  • Volunteer for trail cleanups

  • Educate new off-roaders

  • Speak up during public land-use comment periods

Every responsible action helps show that off-roaders are good stewards of the land.

Can one person really help stop trail closures?

Absolutely. Individual advocacy, reporting issues, attending public meetings, and supporting organizations like the Blue Ribbon Coalition have helped prevent closures in many cases—including successful efforts in states like Arizona.

Jeep Wrangler Plastic Side Steps

Should You Remove Them for Off-Roading?

Quick Answer

Yes, Jeep recommends removing factory plastic side steps before off-roading.
They reduce ground clearance, are easily damaged by rocks, and can cause body damage on uneven terrain.

Jeep Owners manual stating to take side steps off for off-roading
Jeep manual - side step removal

Why Jeep Recommends Removing Plastic Side Steps

Factory plastic side steps are commonly found on Jeep Wrangler Sahara models. They designed for daily driving, not trail use. While they make entry and exit easier on pavement, they become a liability once you leave the road.

According to the Jeep Owner’s Manual, these steps should be removed before off-road driving.

Jeep’s Reasons:

  • Plastic is not impact-rated for rocks or trail obstacles

  • Side steps reduce ground clearance and breakover angle

  • Damaged steps can transfer force into fenders and body panels

In short: they’re built for convenience, not capability.

The Real Risk on the Trail

Plastic side steps hang lower than the frame rails, making them one of the first contact points on rocks and ledges. When that happens, they don’t just break but they can bend upward into the body, causing expensive damage.

Common Problems:

  • Cracked or torn plastic

  • Bent mounting brackets

  • Fender damage

  • Reduced obstacle clearance

  • Getting hung up on rocks instead of sliding over them

Lesson Learned the Hard Way (Real-World Experience)

I learned this lesson firsthand.

While waiting on the trail after navigating a rock section, I relaxed and that’s when it happened. I drove my factory plastic step rail directly over a large rock.

The result?

  • Loud impact

  • Driver-side step pushed up

  • Fender popped out of place

Thankfully, my trail guide knew exactly what to do and was able to pop the step and fender back into place. It could have been a very expensive mistake  I got lucky.

That moment permanently changed how I prep my Jeep for the trail.

Ground Clearance & Breakover Angle Matter

Beyond durability, plastic side steps reduce two critical off-road measurements:

  • Ground clearance

  • Breakover angle

Even losing a couple of inches can mean the difference between:

  • Clearing an obstacle

  • Or getting stuck, hung up, or damaged

When off-roading, every inch counts.

The Better Option: Rock Sliders

Once I started off-roading regularly, I removed the factory steps and installed metal rock sliders.

Why Rock Sliders Are Better:

  • Protect body and frame

  • Designed to slide over rocks

  • Support vehicle weight

  • Improve confidence on technical terrain

  • Double as a step for lifted Jeeps

They’re one of the best functional upgrades you can make if you plan to wheel your Jeep.

To Remove or Not Remove Plastic Side Steps?

It depends on how you use your Jeep.

Keep Them If:

  • You stay on pavement or light dirt roads

  • You don’t encounter rocks or ruts

Remove Them If:

  • You wheel regularly

  • You encounter rocky or uneven terrain

  • You want to avoid body damage

  • You plan to upgrade to sliders

Removing them is a simple DIY job with basic tools and well worth the peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

Jeep didn’t include that warning in the owner’s manual by accident.

Factory plastic side steps serve a purpose, but off-road use isn’t it. If you plan to explore trails, removing them or replacing them with rock sliders protects your Jeep and preserves its capability.

FAQs

Should I remove my Jeep’s plastic side steps before off-roading?
Yes. Jeep recommends removing them because they can be damaged and reduce ground clearance.

Can plastic side steps damage my Jeep on the trail?
Yes. They can bend into fenders or body panels when they hit rocks.

Are rock sliders worth it for a Jeep Wrangler?
Absolutely. Rock sliders protect the body, improve capability, and are designed for trail use.

Why Being Vulnerable is Valuable

The Great Strength in Showing Vulnerability:
Being True to Oneself

In a world that often prizes strength, resilience, and composure, vulnerability might seem like a weakness. However, if we dig deeper into the intricacies of human connection and personal growth, it becomes evident that vulnerability is not just valuable but also noble.

It is the gateway to authenticity, empathy, and genuine relationships. I've come to realize that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of courage and authenticity.

Driving with the Jeep top down on a sunny day.
Jeep driving with the top down

I became hardened, closed off and cold from betrayal in some of my friendships, romantic relationships and work.

After two years of healing from this deep emotional pain, I've realized I can no longer keep myself closed off. I have been afraid to open myself up to people because of fear of betrayal.

Being vulnerable can be one of the most courageous and meaningful acts we undertake in our lives. Learning the right contexts to being vulnerable is what I am learning now.

Jeep Momma

What is vulnerability?

  • A willingness to show up and be seen, even when there is no guarantee of the outcome
  • Being honest with ourselves and others, to be fully seen, imperfections and all

When we embrace vulnerability, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities. We allow ourselves to be truly connected with others, to experience love, joy, and belonging in a way that is impossible when we keep ourselves guarded and closed off.

Showing vulnerability can be a key step in Living Your Best Life.

Brené Brown, a renowned researcher and author on the subject of vulnerability, says it best:

"Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity."

Real Connections & Genuine Relationship

At its core, vulnerability is about being authentic. It's about showing up as our true selves, imperfections and all, without fear of judgment or rejection. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we open the door to genuine connections with others. We give them permission to see us as we truly are, fostering trust and intimacy in our relationships.

Even those we admire have vulnerabilities. It is comforting to know that other people are human just like us. Your first impression of their perfect life isn't always true.

Vulnerability Breeds Empathy

One of the most powerful outcomes of vulnerability is the cultivation of empathy. When we share our struggles, fears, and insecurities with others, we create space for empathy to flourish.

Opening up about our own experiences, we invite others to do the same, fostering a culture of understanding and compassion. Letting others around you know you are not perfect and that's okay breeds a sense of empathy with other people.

Strengthening Relationships

Vulnerability is the cornerstone of meaningful relationships. It requires us to let down our walls, to be honest and open with those we care about.

When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable with others, we create space for deeper connections to form.

We let people in, allowing them to see the depths of our hearts and minds. In doing so, we strengthen the bonds that hold us together, creating relationships built on trust, authenticity, and mutual respect.

Fostering Personal Growth

Embracing vulnerability is not always easy. It requires courage and a willingness to step outside of our comfort zones. However, it is through moments of vulnerability that we experience some of the most profound moments of personal growth. It is in our moments of weakness that we discover our greatest strengths, and it is through our struggles that we learn the true depths of our resilience.

Being vulnerable can also be a powerful tool for personal growth. When we embrace vulnerability, we open ourselves up to the possibility of failure, rejection, and disappointment. But we also open ourselves up to the possibility of success, acceptance, and happiness. It takes courage to be vulnerable, but the rewards are well worth the risk.

You’ll Be Able To Ask For Help

It can feel embarrassing to admit that we’re struggling in life. But the truth is, everyone struggles at one point or another. There’s no shame in it, provided you don’t hide it all. The next time you're facing a challenge, remember that having the wisdom of asking for help is a sign of courage, not weakness.

This not only helps you connect to those around you, but it allows you to get the help you may need. For example, starting an addiction program or getting help with being a parent through the relevant services. This can feel like a weight from your shoulders, and you’ll also wonder why it took you so long to let yourself feel that vulnerable. Better late than never, though.

Remember there is great power in being vulnerable. Even in a world that encourages us to hide our vulnerabilities to project and image of strength and perfection.
