Go With The Flow on Virginia's Jeep Trails

A Day of Flexibility and Fun

When Jeep added a new trail in Virginia to the Badge of Honor App Trail list, my excitement was off the charts. This was the perfect opportunity to plan my first Jeep Momma Trail Ride. With a group of my Jeep friends, we geared up to tackle the Peters Mill Trail just outside Edinburg, Virginia.

The Journey Begins

The Peters Mill Trail is a relatively short adventure, taking about one to two hours. To make the most of our day, we decided to also hit the Flagpole trail, located about 40 minutes south of Peters Mill Run near Harrisonburg. This trail, nestled in the George Washington National Forest, promises a breathtaking view of Virginia and West Virginia from its summit.

An Unexpected Setback

Our adventure kicked off with high spirits as we headed up the mountain. However, one of the Jeeps in our group soon encountered mechanical issues. Despite our best efforts, we couldn't get it back on track. Adhering to the golden rule of off-roading—never wheel alone—one of our group members escorted the ailing Jeep back down the mountain.

Roadblock and Regroup

As we resumed our ascent, another obstacle awaited us. A controlled burn by the forestry department blocked our path about 30 minutes into the trail. While regrouping, we met two fellow Jeepers who were also stymied by the roadblock. Inviting them to join our convoy, we redirected our journey towards Peters Mill Run.

Lunch Break with a Twist

Peters Mill Run, part of a trail system requiring a permit, became our new destination. We stopped at a local gas station to purchase the necessary $5 permits and seized the opportunity for a lunch break. Originally, we had planned to dine at the summit of Flagpole trail, but flexibility is key in off-roading.

Lunch was on me, and I decided to test a unique trail cooking method: using the engine. At the start of the trail, I placed a ham and cheese sandwich between the intake manifold and battery. After cooking for over four hours, we unveiled a surprisingly delicious sammie.

Earning Our Badge

With lunch behind us, it was time to earn our badge on Peters Mill Run. This old mining road on Powell Mountain offers a bumpy ride with plenty of twists and turns. However, our plans faced another hiccup when we encountered a lone Gecko-colored Jeep stuck in the mud—another reminder of the off-roading rule: never wheel alone.

Rescue Mission

True to the Jeep spirit, we couldn't leave a fellow Jeeper stranded. We broke out the recovery gear and set to work winching the Gecko out of the mud. The effort took quite a while, pushing our schedule back and making it too late to hit our last planned trail, Taskers Gap.

Ending on a High Note

Despite the setbacks, we made the best of our day by visiting the Woodstock fire tower. While I only managed to climb one flight of stairs before my nerves got the best of me, it was a fun detour.

Embracing the Journey

This day was a lesson in flexibility and the joy of the journey over the destination. As a Jeep owner and off-road enthusiast, I've learned that the best adventures are the ones that don’t go as planned. Meeting new Jeepers, honing recovery skills, and spending quality time with amazing people made this a memorable trip.

Remember, in off-roading and life, it's all about going with the flow and embracing the unexpected. Keep your spirits high, your Jeep ready, and enjoy the ride!

7 Hidden Jeep Wrangler Easter Eggs Every Owner Should Find

Hidden Jeep Gems Inside My Jeep Wrangler

When I first heard people talking about hidden “Jeep Easter Eggs” inside their Jeep Wrangler, I honestly thought they were joking. Then I started noticing tiny tributes and hidden details all throughout my Jeep.

Jeep designers intentionally place these hidden symbols inside many Wrangler models as a tribute to the legendary Willys Jeep that helped start Jeep history and off-road culture.

The more I searched, the more I found.

So far, I’ve discovered eight hidden Jeep Easter Eggs in my Wrangler and now every Jeep ride feels like a treasure hunt.

Explore my blog post, "Jeep Secrets Revealed," to uncover hidden features and surprises in your Jeep that you might have overlooked.

Recommended Jeep Wrangler Tips

What Are Jeep Easter Eggs?

Jeep Easter Eggs are small hidden design details, logos, shapes, or symbols placed throughout Jeep vehicles by Chrysler and Jeep designers. Many of these hidden features honor Jeep history, military roots, and off-road culture.

Some Easter Eggs are obvious once you know where to look, while others are hidden so well you may never notice them.

If you own a Wrangler, chances are you already have a few hidden Jeep gems waiting to be discovered.

1. Seven Slot Grille on the Windshield

One of the first Easter Eggs I noticed was the tiny seven-slot grille silhouette near the windshield on my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Once you spot it, you can’t unsee it because it’s right there every time you glance toward your rearview mirror.

The seven-slot grille is one of the most recognizable Jeep design features and represents Jeep’s iconic styling heritage.

2. “Jeep Since 1941” on the Grab Handle

The passenger grab handle inside my Wrangler has embossed lettering that reads:

“Jeep Since 1941”

This small detail pays tribute to the beginning of Jeep history and the original military-style vehicles that inspired today’s Wranglers.

3. Jeep Climbing Rocks on the Windshield

One of my favorite hidden Jeep Easter Eggs is the small silhouette of a Jeep climbing over rocks located on the passenger side windshield.

This tiny design perfectly captures the adventurous off-road spirit Jeep owners love..

4. Willys Jeep on the Wheels

If you own a Sahara or Rubicon model, take a close look at your wheels.

I found a tiny Willys Jeep silhouette hidden on my rims. It’s a subtle nod to Jeep’s military roots and one of the coolest Easter Eggs I’ve found so far..

5. Seven Slot Grille Inside the Cup Holder

Even the front cup holders continue the Jeep theme.

Inside mine is an embossed version of the famous seven-slot grille design. It’s one of those tiny details most people never notice until someone points it out.

6. Seven Slots on the Wiper Cowl

The seven-slot design appears again on the wiper cowl near the hood.

Jeep designers clearly love carrying this iconic styling cue throughout the entire vehicle.

The air dam also includes similar grille-inspired details..

7. Center Console Controls Inspired by the Jeep Grille

Another hidden styling feature appears in the center console controls.

The arrangement and shape of the buttons resemble the classic Jeep seven-slot grille layout.

It’s subtle, but once you see it, you’ll recognize the inspiration immediately.

Why Jeep Easter Eggs Matter

These hidden Jeep Easter Eggs may seem small, but they create a connection between modern Jeep owners and Jeep history.

They also make owning a Jeep more fun.

Every time I discover another hidden detail in my Wrangler, it reminds me why Jeep culture feels different from owning an ordinary vehicle. Jeep owners love adventure, history, and the little things that make their vehicles unique.

And honestly… now I can’t stop looking for more.

Final Thoughts

If you own a Jeep Wrangler, spend a few extra minutes looking around your interior and exterior. You may be surprised how many hidden Jeep Easter Eggs are built into your vehicle.

Some are easy to spot. Others take a little hunting.

That’s part of the fun.

Have you found any hidden Jeep Easter Eggs in your Wrangler? Let me know which ones you’ve discovered.

A Family Wheeling Day in Maryland

Discovering Off-Road Adventures in Maryland

For the longest time I didn't think there were any legal places to wheel in Maryland. Gary from the Northwest Jeepcast pointed me to a fantastic resource: TrailsOffRoad.com, which is currently rolling out trail guides for all 50 states and US Territories.

The Frederick Watershed Adventure

One of the gems I discovered on this site is the Frederick Watershed, just 45 minutes from my doorstep. What makes this even more exciting is that my family, who usually find a million reasons to avoid joining my Jeep escapades, were on board for this one.

Family Fun in the Frederick Watershed

Our adventure took us to the Frederick Watershed, a 7,000-acre oasis just 15 minutes outside Frederick, Maryland. This forest paradise features over 11 miles of gravel, dirt, and slightly rocky roads with a charming creek meandering through. The technical rating? A beginner-friendly 1 to 2, meaning it’s mostly dry dirt roads, shallow water crossings, a few ruts, and gentle grades up to 10 degrees.

Looking behind my Jeep at a small lake.

I navigated the entire route in two-wheel drive, but I can imagine the added fun (and challenge) if rain or snow kicks in. During winter, these unplowed gravel roads turn into a snow-wheeling wonderland.

A Perfect Day for Wheeling

Sure, these trails might not qualify as hardcore off-road destinations, but they offer a fantastic way to spend a few hours exploring nature. My family and I had a great time, with my youngest son already asking for more day trips. We got our tires a bit muddy, explored creeks, and captured some stunning videos of my Jeep against the beautiful forest backdrop.

More Trails to Explore

But the fun doesn't stop there. Maryland has more to offer! The  Greenridge State Forest, and several scenic dirt roads in Frederick, Maryland, await our exploration. Rural Roads in Frederick, Maryland.

I have been on so many Adventures over the years, each one has a special place in my heart.

Jeep Tire Carrier Seized Up Fix

Solution for Jeep a Stuck Swing Out Tire Carrier

A few years ago when I went to get something out of the back of my Jeep. To my dismay, I couldn't open the spare tire carrier. It would not swing open, so I had to get my son to help me push it.

On my Barricade Trailforce HD Bumper with Tire Carrier the swing arm attaches to a post which is attached to the bumper. It seized up. Somehow I needed to pull the swing arm off the bumper and re-grease the post. It was not budging!

PB Plaster

Steps to Free Up The Swing Arm

Remove the allen-head bolt and top cap from the post. Using PB Blaster spray the post thoroughly. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then spray again. Do this several times, then one more just for good measure.

Using a dead blow hammer on the post.
using hammer on my tire carrier post

Using a dead blow hammer, tap the swing arm where it connects with the post. I used a cloth so I wouldn't damage the paint. My tap was not gentle.

In between hammer blows I would push the swing arm back and forth. I continued this process many, many times. I would say 10 to 20 times. It still would not budge. So I called my friend Henry for some help. He had a super gi-normous pry bar he said he could bring over. However, I needed to wait until the next morning.

The five foot pry bar

The next morning with the 5 foot pry bar it came right up. So I would say the PB Blaster and hammer blows helped loosen it up. The proper leverage to pull the swing arm straight up from the post made a big difference.

Jeep Momma Tip - At least twice a year do some preventative maintenance by re-greasing your post if you have a spare tire carrier that swings.

JK Pockets Review

Interior Storage Upgrade for  Your Jeep

If you own a Jeep Wrangler JK (2007-2018), you probably share my frustration with the factory cargo net pockets. After years of sagging, stretching, and losing small items, I found a game-changing solution: JK Pockets.

JK Pockets

Why Replace Factory Cargo Net Pockets?

The original Jeep cargo net pockets drove me crazy. Sure, you could stuff them full, but that just stretched them out even more. Small items, like my phone, keys, and sunglasses, frequently fell out. Additionally, every time I got out of my Jeep, the hooks on my boot laces inevitably snagged on the netting, which was incredibly irritating.

JK Pockets Key Features & Benefits

JK Pockets provide a rigid, sturdy alternative made from durable, aircraft-grade plastic:

  • Material: Aircraft-grade plastic ensures long-term durability.

  • Variety: Available for front doors, rear doors, and center console.

  • Seamless Fit: Custom-designed to fit perfectly into existing door panels.

  • Secure Storage: Keeps small items organized and easily accessible.

After using JK Pockets for over three years on multiple off-road adventures, they've securely held my phone, maps, trail snacks, and gloves—making every trip smoother and more organized.

How to Install JK Pockets on a Jeep Wrangler

Installation is incredibly simple and doesn’t require removing your door panels:

  1. Carefully cut out the OEM cargo net.

  2. Snap the JK Pocket directly into place on the door panel.

The installation process took me less than 10 minutes per door. Easy!

Long-Term Review & Durability of JK Pockets

Having used JK Pockets daily, I can confidently say they're durable and highly practical. However, occasionally, I noticed pockets becoming slightly loose from hitting them with my boots. To address this minor issue, I applied a small amount of automotive adhesive to secure them firmly in place—problem solved.

JK Pockets continue to be one of my top recommended Jeep accessories, significantly upgrading my Jeep’s interior storage capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions about JK Pockets

Are JK Pockets compatible with all Jeep Wrangler models?
JK Pockets are specifically designed for Jeep Wrangler JK models (2007-2018), fitting perfectly without modifications.

How much weight can JK Pockets hold?
They comfortably hold everyday items like phones, sunglasses, maps, snacks, and gloves without deforming.

No, JK Pockets can easily be installed by anyone—simply cut out the OEM net and snap them securely in place.

Overcoming Fears and Embracing the Jeep Life

Conquering the Trails & Embracing the Unknown

On a crisp February morning, I found myself gearing up my Jeep for an exhilarating day at Anthracite Off Road Adventure Area (AOAA). Nestled about 30 minutes north of Rausch Creek Off Road Park in Pennsylvania, AOAA promised a day filled with adventure, camaraderie, and the thrill of the unknown. This was my first big Jeep convoy, and the excitement was palpable.

Jeeps lined up on the trail

The Convoy Begins: Meeting Fellow Jeep Enthusiasts

As the sun peeked over the horizon, I joined a convoy of Jeep enthusiasts, ready to tackle the trails. This was only my second visit to AOAA, and I was eager to explore new trails and reconnect with Jeep friends I'd met online. Among the group was a fellow YouTuber and Jeeper, CPO from 03dJeeps. We'd been trying to sync our schedules for a couple of years, and finally, the stars had aligned for a day of wheeling.

Chris from O3D Jeeps and myself

Trusting the Guide: Navigating Blue Trails

Our guide for the day was none other than Nate, AKA SWBCrawler. Nate's extensive knowledge of the park and his role as a trail guide for Off Road Consulting and Driving Instruction made him the perfect leader. Plus, he's an awesome spotter, ensuring everyone had a safe and thrilling experience.

Nate, SWB Crawler & myself

Our plan was to tackle as many blue trails as possible. Blue trails had always intimidated me, but today felt different. With Nate's expert spotting and my trusty Rubicon, I was ready to conquer my fears and embrace the challenge.

Facing the Black Trail: A Moment of Decision

As we navigated the blue trails, we stumbled upon Trail "W," a notorious black trail. My heart raced with indecision. Should I attempt it? I knew my Jeep was capable, but self-doubt lingered. Stepping out of my Jeep, I walked the trail, assessing the obstacles and envisioning the path ahead.

My Jeep ready for the rocky trails

Embracing the Challenge: Trail "W"

With a deep breath and a surge of determination, I decided to go for it. Trail "W" was a test of my skills and my confidence. As I maneuvered over the rocks and through the rough terrain, a few choice expletives slipped out, but I made it to the end unscathed. The sense of accomplishment was indescribable.

Nate spotting me through the trails

A Day to Remember: Building Confidence and Camaraderie

The day was nothing short of amazing. The trails, the friends, and the challenges all contributed to an unforgettable experience. I gained a newfound confidence in my driving abilities and a better understanding of my Jeep's capabilities. While the fear of tipping over and heights may never completely vanish, they add to the adrenaline and excitement that make off-roading so thrilling.

My Jeep wheeled with ease.

This adventure was a testament to the power of facing fears head-on, trusting in the skills I've honed over the years, and embracing the support of the Jeep community. Here's to many more trail-blazing adventures and the endless pursuit of off-road thrills.
