A Jeep Adventure to Remember

Women's Wheeling Day at Rausch Creek Off Road Park

Women's Wheeling Day at Rausch Creek Off Road Park has become a highlight of my year, and this year's event was no exception. As I attended for the fourth time, I was amazed to see over 200 incredible women join in the fun.

The growth of this event is truly remarkable. What started as a small gathering of just eight women in 2013 has blossomed into a massive celebration of female Jeep enthusiasts.

Friday Festivities: Swag and Socializing

My adventure began early as I helped stuff swag bags with JeepMomma bracelets, purple Jeep Talk Show koozies, and other goodies from various vendors. The excitement was palpable as we prepared for the influx of participants.

The meet and greet at O'Neal's Pub was a perfect way to kick off the weekend. Reconnecting with old wheeling friends and making new connections set the tone for the incredible days ahead.

Advanced Recovery Techniques

Our group of five Jeeps started the day with an advanced winching and hi-lift class presented by NORA4x4. The instructor, Jon, provided invaluable insights into vehicle recovery techniques. This class was a game-changer, inspiring me to seek more training in the future.

Diverse Trails for All Skill Levels

Rausch Creek Off-Road Park offers a wide range of trails suitable for various skill levels. With over 3,000 acres and 80 miles of trails, there's something for everyone – from stock vehicles to pro rock buggies.

Our group featured a diverse mix of drivers, including a stock Jeep tackling blue (intermediate) trails for the first time. The park's color-coded trail system, ranging from green (easy) to red (extreme), allows groups of different skill levels to run trails together. For the second year in a row, I paired up with Mandy as my Trail Guide, and I served as the tail gunner. We had such a fantastic time last year, so we teamed up again.

Capturing the Moment

JoMarie, a Gazelle Rally 2014 competitor and talented photojournalist from USNomads.org, joined our group and captured some fantastic shots of our Jeeps conquering the rocks.

Camaraderie and Community

The heart of this event lies in the incredible women who attend. The supportive and encouraging atmosphere leaves everyone feeling empowered. My trail buddy, Amanda, a fellow Jeep mom I met online years ago, exemplifies this spirit of camaraderie.

Celebrating Success

After a day of thrilling off-road adventures, we gathered at the pavilion for a well-deserved pizza and salad dinner, courtesy of OK4WD. The event concluded with a generous raffle featuring prizes from various vendors. I was lucky enough to win a gift certificate from Northridge 4x4, which I used to purchase a Bartact Fire Extinguisher Mount for my Jeep.

Looking Ahead

Women's Wheeling Day at Rausch Creek Off Road Park is more than just an off-road event; it's a celebration of female empowerment and the incredible Jeep community. As I reflect on this unforgettable experience, I'm already looking forward to next year's adventure.

For those interested in experiencing Rausch Creek Off-Road Park, remember that a minimum group size of two vehicles is required. The park offers monthly guided trail rides and instructional programs for those new to off-roading or looking to improve their skills

Women’s Wheeling Day at Rausch Creek Off Road Park is hands down one of my favorite events of the year! This year marked my fourth year attending, and over 200 amazing ladies joined the fun.

How to NOT Get Ripped Off by a Mechanic

Top 5 Tips

These are the same steps I recommend to every Jeeper—from beginners to seasoned wheeling veterans.

[Top 5 Tips] How To NOT Get Ripped Off Conman Mechanic Scam Alert

1. Avoid Generic “Car” Mechanics and Chain Shops

Most shops that work on standard commuter vehicles don’t understand the unique geometry and stress points of a lifted Jeep. Even some franchise shops that “do lifts” may not specialize in true off-road setups.

Look instead for:

  • Independent 4x4 shops

  • Jeep-specific or off-road specialty shops

  • Mechanics who are Jeepers themselves

These professionals understand articulation, driveline angles, caster correction, and other Jeep-specific quirks.

2. Tap Into Your Local Jeep Community

Your local Jeep club or regional off-road groups are goldmines for referrals. Jeepers are honest about which shops do great work and which ones to avoid.
You’ll get real-world feedback from people who run the same trails and upgrades you do.

3. Choose a Mechanic With Off-Road Experience

If you wheel your Jeep, your mechanic should too.
A mechanic who off-roads understands:

  • What parts actually perform well on rocky, muddy, or snowy trails

  • How geometry changes affect handling

  • What upgrades are worth the money (and which are hype)

  • Real-world reliability

Trail experience = better recommendations and safer builds.

4. Ask Fellow Jeepers for References

Before committing to a mechanic, ask around.
Good shops have:

  • Word-of-mouth recommendations

  • Positive online reviews

  • Before/after photos of builds

  • Clear communication

If no one in your Jeep circle has heard of them… that’s a red flag.

5. Educate Yourself About Your Jeep

The more you understand your Jeep, the harder it is for someone to take advantage of you.
You don’t need to be a full DIY mechanic but basic knowledge goes a long way.

For more help, check out my full Jeep Tips page where I share maintenance guides, how-to posts, and off-roading advice.

What’s the best way to find a trustworthy Jeep mechanic?
The best way is to choose a Jeep-specific or off-road specialty shop, ask for referrals from local Jeep clubs and fellow off-roaders, look for mechanics who wheel themselves, and avoid generic car repair chains. Understanding your Jeep and asking for references also reduces your chances of being overcharged or misled.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

These questions target Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and align with common search behaviors.

1. What should I look for in a Jeep mechanic?

Look for a mechanic or shop that specializes in Jeeps or off-road vehicles, has experience with suspension and drivetrain modifications, and can provide references or examples of prior builds.

2. How do I know if a mechanic is overcharging me?

Ask for a written estimate, compare quotes from similar Jeep-focused shops, and research parts pricing. If something seems inflated or vague, request clarification before approving the work.

3. Should I take my Jeep to a regular auto mechanic?

For basic maintenance, sometimes. But for suspension work, lifts, gears, lockers, or electrical upgrades, it’s best to go to a 4x4 shop or Jeep specialist. Jeeps require unique knowledge that general car mechanics often lack.

4. How can I avoid getting scammed by a mechanic?

Get multiple opinions, ask for photos or explanations of needed repairs, verify part costs, and avoid shops that refuse to return old parts or get defensive when you ask questions.

5. Why is off-road experience important for a mechanic?

A mechanic who off-roads understands real-world trail stress, articulation needs, and the way modifications affect performance. Their advice is usually more accurate and trustworthy.

6. How do I find Jeep mechanics near me?

Search terms like “Jeep mechanic near me,” “4x4 shop near me,” or “off-road Jeep specialist,” then cross-check reviews and ask your local Jeep club for recommendations.

7. Can I learn to do Jeep maintenance myself?

Absolutely. Many Jeep owners start small, changing oils, checking torque specs, or swapping bolt-on parts. Learning the basics helps you understand your vehicle better and reduces the likelihood of being ripped off.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to get a good reliable mechanic to work on your Jeep, especially when you are upgrading and making aftermarket changes.  On the Off-road Insiders podcast my co-host Nate and I discuss How to Find a Trusty Mechanic.

Inside the Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant: A Rare Behind-the-Scenes Tour

A Rare Look Inside the Birthplace of the Jeep Wrangler

For most people, Toledo, Ohio, is simply another Midwestern city.

For Jeep owners, it's something entirely different.

It's home to the Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant, where generations of Jeep Wranglers have been built before heading off to adventures around the world.

As a longtime Jeep owner and creator of Jeep Momma, I had the incredible opportunity to tour the Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant thanks to a special invitation from a Jeep employee. What I experienced gave me a whole new appreciation for the people, precision, and passion behind every Wrangler.

Very few Jeep owners ever get the opportunity to step inside the Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant. This behind-the-scenes visit gave me a firsthand look at how Jeep Wranglers are built, tested, and prepared for life on and off the trail.

Quick Answer: What Is the Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant?

The Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio, is where Jeep Wranglers are assembled, tested, and prepared for shipment to dealerships. It is one of the most iconic automotive manufacturing facilities in the United States and has been building Jeep vehicles for decades.

Public tours are generally NOT available. Although special invitations and events occasionally provide rare behind-the-scenes access.

Location: Toledo, Ohio

Built Here: Jeep Wrangler

Public Tours: Generally not available

My Visit: Private behind-the-scenes tour hosted by Royal, a third-generation Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant employee and JK Specifications Analyst.

Why Trust My Experience?

I've owned Jeep Wranglers for years, explored trails across the country, and built Jeep Momma around sharing the Jeep lifestyle. Very few Jeep owners ever get to see the Wrangler assembly process from inside the plant.

This visit wasn't a public factory tour it was a private behind-the-scenes experience hosted by Royal, a third-generation Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant employee and JK Specifications Analyst. Seeing the Wrangler assembly process firsthand gave me a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into every Jeep.

Royal & I in the Jeep parking lot

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Invitation

The adventure started with an unexpected message from one of my readers.

Royal, who worked at the Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant, invited me to see where Jeep Wranglers are built.

Driving down Jeep Parkway and Willys Parkway, I knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary factory visit.

For any Jeep enthusiast, it felt like arriving at Jeep headquarters.

The Hidden Jeep JL

One of the most exciting moments happened near the testing facility.

I was able to photograph something very few people had seen.

A fully wrapped pre-production Jeep JL.

At the time, the JL hadn't been officially introduced to the public.

About a month later, photos of the new Wrangler began appearing online, and believe it or notthe folks at Jeep jokingly wondered if I had leaked them.

I hadn't.

But getting that early glimpse of the future Wrangler is a memory I'll never forget.

Meeting the People Behind the Jeep

One of the biggest surprises wasn't the assembly line.

It was the people.

Throughout the plant, employees spoke with genuine pride about the vehicles they built every day.

Royal shared stories about new model launches, production changes, and the excitement employees felt whenever a new Jeep color rolled down the line.

That passion was contagious.

It reminded me that every Jeep has hundreds of people behind it who genuinely care about the finished product.

Inside the Wrangler Assembly Line

Photography wasn't allowed inside most of the facility, which turned out to be a blessing.

Without worrying about taking pictures, I could simply watch.

It was fascinating to see robots and skilled technicians working together to assemble each Wrangler with incredible precision.

Every station had a purpose.

Every employee had a role.

Every Jeep moved steadily toward becoming someone's next adventure vehicle.

Standing there watching hundreds of people and robots working together, I realized something I'd never thought about before. Every Jeep on the road represents thousands of small decisions, inspections, and adjustments made by people who take pride in what they build.

Precision at Every Step

One thing that impressed me most was the attention to detail.

Door alignment.

Body fitment.

Interior installation.

Every adjustment mattered.

Watching experienced technicians make tiny corrections showed me just how much craftsmanship goes into building a Wrangler.

How Jeep Wranglers Are Tested

Building the Jeep is only part of the process.

Before leaving the plant, every Wrangler goes through multiple inspections and testing procedures.

These include:

  • Water leak testing
  • Quality inspections
  • Functional system checks
  • Indoor driving evaluation for rattles and squeaks

It was reassuring to see how much testing happens before a Jeep ever reaches a dealership.

Witnessing the End of the JK Era

Timing made the visit even more special.

The legendary JK Wrangler was nearing the end of its production run.

Knowing the JK would soon give way to the JL made the visit feel like witnessing Jeep history in real time.

It was exciting to look ahead to the next generation while also appreciating everything the JK had accomplished.

What This Tour Taught Me

Before visiting Toledo, I appreciated my Jeep because of where it could take me.

After visiting the plant, I appreciated it for an entirely different reason.

I saw the dedication, teamwork, and craftsmanship behind every Wrangler.

It's easy to think of a Jeep as just another vehicle.

Walking through the Toledo Assembly Plant reminded me that every Jeep represents thousands of hours of engineering, manufacturing, testing, and pride.

Tom Woods Custom Driveshaft Upgrade

A lifted Jeep Wrangler Must-Do Modification

Mechanic installing my new front driveshaft
Tom Woods Driveshaft Install

Leaking Factory Driveshaft

My Jeep was in for a check up and my mechanic noticed leaking from my stock factory driveshaft. My Rubicon was lifted and 35 inch tires were added. The stock driveshaft has a hard time holding up to the stresses from bigger tires and the change in geometry from a lift.

Leaking Factory Jeep Driveshaft

Typically the first thing that will happen from the stress is the boot will tear and grease eventually leaks. The 2015 Wrangler's (Rubicon) front driveshaft has a rzeppa joint. This joint has a boot which protects it’s guts. Mine has been flexed to it’s limits. This boot can’t hold up to the stress of the added lift on my Jeep.

Rzeppa Joint

Some might even hear a clicking noise. I caught mine before it failed. These stock driveshaft's are larger in diameter. When lifted this can cause them to possibly rest on the exhaust which causes more issues. You will see this issue with 3" or more of a lift after of 20K to 30K driving, or after off road use when the suspension stretches "droop". The Wrangler's driveshaft will come into contact with the exhaust cross pipe, requiring an exhaust  spacer or new driveshaft.

Driveshaft Joints Double Cardan & Rzeppa

The 07 and up Wrangler JK's & JKU's drive shafts come with Rzeppa joints. They are stronger than the typical driveshaft, but the Rzeppa joint is designed to run as straight as possible. When they run at steeper angles than what the factory set them up for after extended periods of time they will prematurely wear out.

Tom Woods Custom Driveshafts

Aftermarket Replacement

I replaced my stock front driveshaft with a Tom Wood's Custom Driveshaft. A little preventive maintenance on my part. The OEM driveshaft was still working, but eventually would have failed.

Tom Woods Custom drive shafts use what is called a double Cardan CV joint, which has been around for decades. They can live and run happily for over 100,000 miles if you service it properly. A little tender loving care goes a long way.

New driveshaft install

They have a smaller diameter which allows the suspension to drop on 2012 and newer 3.6 Wranglers without touching the exhaust, which could possibly damage the drive shaft.

New driveshaft clears the exhaust

What Does the Drive Shaft Do?

Driveshaft diagram

The Wrangler’s driveshaft performs a crucial function. It moves power from your engine to the wheels and transfers torque to the differential from the transfer case. Torque is the strength of your Jeep's engine.  A driveshaft transmits that raw power to the differential. The differential spins the wheels to move your Jeep, whether along the highway or up over those rocks or even through the mud.

The stock driveshaft is designed to match the suspension travel of the factory suspension. It's not too tough either, just enough for average driving and fairly mild off-roading. It lacks grease fittings due to cost cutting during the engineering process.

Driveshaft install

Aftermarket Drive Shaft Maintenance

The factory shafts can't be greased. The Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shaft can, but you need to keep up with the greasing.

In this video, Greasing the Toms Wood's Custom drive shaft, I share the locations of the grease zerts.

Double Cardan Joint

The Tom Wood’s front drive shaft is a double cardan joint. This allows for more movement of the joint. Regular maintenance is important to keep the Tom Wood's Drive Shaft  in excellent condition and give it a long life. The most important maintenance of this drive shaft is regular greasing. The Tom Wood's website says “We believe a frequent and thorough greasing is more important than the type of grease you use. There are also several points for re-greasing. A very important maintenance duty you must keep up with. If you are diligent in re-greasing your Tom Wood's driveshaft will last forever.

Tom Woods Driveshaft

One of the main results of the greasing is a proper "flushing out" of any contaminates. A little grease and dirt make an excellent grinding compound, which you don’t want to have.  Re-grease every oil change and after you have been in water or mud when off-roading.

Driveshaft Joint

All you need is a good grease gun and some grease. You could do this in your own garage, but putting your Jeep on a lift would make it easier. There is one seal in the joint that you need to turn the driveshaft to get at it. While greasing, if you pump in grease until you see clean grease come out past ALL the seals, you will insure that most of the contaminants will be washed away. This is extremely important if you submerge your Jeep in water or mud.

Driveshaft

There are five seals that need to be greased. Just push on the coupler on the seal and squeeze in the grease. You will be able to see the old grease come out of the seals.

Grease fittings

One of the seals is a little hard to find inside the joint. Turning your drive shaft will help locate it.   Note: Not all drive shafts need this type of greasing. Check with your manufacturer to ensure proper greasing.
