Empty Nest Tips for Getting Through

Challenges: The Evolution of Motherhood

My empty nest challenges began before my kids even left the nest.

In 1999, I decided to step away from my career in television news to raise my two sons. I devoted many years to caring for my family and nurturing my kids.

Little did I know this path would lead me to a profound sense of loss and self-discovery.

As the years went by my children needed me less and less and I felt lost. After deferring my own aspirations in television news, which is now a blessing, I faced the daunting task of rekindling my own new aspirations.

It was time to reinvent myself. This transition was no walk in the park; it came with many emotional obstacles, personal challenges and several mistakes.

Through the process, I learned invaluable lessons that would shape the person I am becoming.

Fast forward to today, my two boys have grown into adults charting their own life path. While I have had over a decade to come to terms to that initial sense of loss that comes when your child moves onto their own life out of the house, the feeling has deepened. Those glorious and joyful times of their childhood are now just fading memories, which remind me of the substantial amount of time that has passed in my life.

Some days, this loss is overwhelming and the challenges feel insurmountable. I am discovering a few strategies that have helped me cope during these difficult moments. I found keeping busy, going on walks in the warm sun, putting God first and focusing on ways to be closer to my kids and sisters.

The empty nest season of life is a transformative time, that invites us to rediscover ourselves and redefine our purpose in life. The path is full of challenges and uncertainties, but also a time of growth and self-realization.

I am embracing the lessons I learned from the past decade, realizing it was needed to get to where I am today. I am grateful for all those past moments, good and bad.

Now, it's time for me to stop looking in the rear-view mirror and look forward to these new chapters in life with my adult children.

Here are some helpful tips for those facing similar empty nest challenges:

Embrace the Evolution of Motherhood

Motherhood evolves as your children grow, and it's essential to acknowledge that your role will change over time. Celebrate the fact that you provided a nurturing environment for your kids to become independent adults.

Reconnect with Your Passions

Many of us put our own aspirations on hold while raising children. Now is the perfect time to rediscover and pursue your interests and passions. Dust off those old hobbies, consider new ones, or revisit career goals you once had.

Learn from Your Mistakes

The journey to self-discovery often comes with missteps and setbacks. Embrace these as valuable learning experiences. Mistakes are an integral part of growth and reinvention. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Acknowledge the Profound Loss

It's okay to grieve the departure of your children from your daily life. This loss can feel overwhelming, but acknowledging it is the first step towards healing and finding new sources of happiness.

Stay Active and Engaged

Keeping busy is a great way to fill the void left by your children. Consider volunteering, taking up a new sport, or pursuing further education. Staying active and engaged will help you meet new people and create fresh experiences.

Spend Time in Nature

Nature has a soothing effect on the soul. Going on walks in the sun, spending time outdoors, or simply tending to a garden can help you find solace and peace during this transition. The mountains are my place to soothe my soul.

Prioritize Your Well-being

Self-care is crucial during this phase of life. Make sure to prioritize your physical and emotional well-being. Exercise regularly, eat healthily, and seek professional support if needed. Your health matters.

Cultivate Your Spiritual Life

For many, turning to faith and spirituality can provide immense comfort during times of loss and change. Consider putting God at the center of your life for guidance and support.

Remember this empty nest phase is an opportunity for personal growth, reinvention, and self-discovery. While some days may feel overwhelming, you have the power to shape this new chapter of your life in a way that brings you joy and fulfillment. Embrace it with open arms, and you may find that the best is yet to come.

LED Light Bulb Comparison

2015 Jeep Wrangler Dome light Upgrade

As a Jeep owner and experienced off-road enthusiast, upgrading my Jeep’s interior lighting has been a priority for both practical and aesthetic reasons. Recently, I tested two popular LED dome light options for my 2015 Jeep Wrangler: the Lasfit LED Bulb and the Sylvania LED Bulb. Here’s a comprehensive comparison based on brightness, cost, and overall value.

Lasfit LED Bulb vs. Sylvania LED Bulb

Both Lasfit and Sylvania LED bulbs offer enhanced brightness and improved energy efficiency over traditional dome bulbs. At first glance, their brightness levels and durability seem comparable. However, significant differences become apparent when looking at pricing and overall value.

Cost Comparison:

  • Sylvania LED Bulb: Typically priced higher at about $25.99.

The Lasfit bulb provides excellent value at nearly half the price of the Sylvania option, making it a strong choice for budget-conscious Jeep owners.

  • Sylvania LED Bulb: Known for established brand reliability, albeit at a premium cost.

When making your choice, weigh the balance between immediate savings and long-term performance.

Q: Why are some LED bulbs cheaper than others?
A: Price variations can depend on factors like brand reputation, warranty coverage, build quality, and materials used.

Expert Recommendation

As a seasoned Jeep owner who has tested both bulbs, my personal recommendation for an excellent balance of quality and cost-effectiveness is the Lasfit LED Bulb. The combination of affordability, customer satisfaction, and impressive brightness makes it an optimal choice.

Selecting the right LED bulb upgrade for your Jeep involves balancing cost, quality, and long-term reliability. Always consider warranty coverage, customer reviews, and potential longevity issues before making your final decision. Airing Down Tires Off-Road

Why It Matters, How Low to Go, and When to Do It

Quick Answer

What does airing down tires mean and why should you do it off-road?
Airing down tires means lowering tire pressure below street levels to improve traction, ride comfort, and control on off-road terrain. It helps tires grip rocks, sand, mud, snow, and gravel while reducing trail damage and vehicle stress.

👉 Typical off-road tire pressures range from 12–20 PSI, depending on terrain, tire size, and vehicle weight. Always air back up before driving on pavement.

Why Trust My Airing Down Advice?

I've aired down my Jeep Wrangler on trails across Colorado, Wyoming, Minnesota, and beyond. From rocky mountain passes to gravel roads, mud, and snow, I've experienced firsthand how proper tire pressure can completely change a Jeep's performance.

Over the years, I've tested different tire pressures, tire deflators, gauges, and air compressors while learning what works best in real-world off-road situations. These recommendations come from personal experience, not theory.

My tire with the J.T. Brooks Tire Deflator attached.
Airing down tire with J.T. Brooks Tire Deflators

Airing Down Tires: Off-Roading 101

Airing down is one of the simplest and most effective off-road techniques you can use. Whether you're driving on gravel roads, dirt trails, sand, mud, snow, or rock, reducing tire pressure dramatically improves how your Jeep performs and handles.

Air Down simply means reducing your tire pressure below normal on-road PSI to allow the tire to better adapt to uneven terrain.

Why You Should Air Down Your Tires Off-Road

1️⃣ Improved Traction

Lower tire pressure increases the contact area between your tire and the ground. This larger footprint allows the tire to conform to rocks, ruts, and uneven terrain, dramatically improving grip.

Benefits:

  • Increased surface contact

  • Better grip on rocks, mud, sand, and snow

  • Improved climbing and crawling ability

2️⃣ Smoother, More Controlled Ride

Airing down allows the tire’s sidewalls to flex and absorb impacts from rocks and bumps instead of transferring them directly to your suspension.

Benefits:

  • Reduced harsh jolts

  • Better vehicle control

  • Less driver fatigue

3️⃣ Enhanced Flotation on Soft Surfaces

On sand and snow, aired-down tires spread your Jeep’s weight over a wider surface area, helping prevent sinking and reducing the chance of getting stuck.

Benefits:

  • Prevents digging in

  • Improves forward momentum

  • Reduces recovery situations

4️⃣ Reduced Trail & Tire Damage

Aired-down tires wrap around obstacles instead of bouncing off them. This reduces trail erosion and lowers the risk of punctures or sidewall damage.

Benefits:

  • Less spinning and digging

  • Reduced impact on trails

  • Lower chance of tire failure

Common Airing Down Mistakes

Airing Down Too Much

Lower isn't always better. Tire pressure should match the terrain, tire size, and vehicle weight.

Forgetting to Air Back Up

Driving on pavement with low tire pressure can cause excessive tire wear, poor handling, and overheating.

Not Carrying an Air Compressor

Airing down without a way to air back up can create problems once the trail ends.

Guessing Tire Pressure

Always use a quality tire gauge instead of estimating pressure by appearance.

Recommended Tire Pressures by Terrain

TerrainRecommended PSI
Highway DrivingManufacturer Recommended PSI
Gravel Roads18–22 PSI
Dirt Roads18–22 PSI
Rocky Trails12–16 PSI
Sand10–15 PSI
Snow10–15 PSI
Beadlock WheelsMay allow lower pressures

Tools That Make Airing Down Easier

  • Automatic tire deflators (set it and forget it) - I use JT Brooks Tire Deflators because they allow me to set my desired pressure and move from tire to tire without constantly checking a gauge.

  • Reliable Tire Guage - A quality tire gauge is essential because even a few PSI can make a noticeable difference on the trail.

  • Portable air compressor - An air compressor is one of the most-used tools in my Jeep. Every time I air down, I need a way to air back up before driving home. I now use the ARB

  • The Colby Valve - I carry a Colby Valve because a damaged valve stem can quickly end a trail day if you're not prepared.

Jeep Momma Tip

Airing down isn’t about going as low as possible it’s about finding the right pressure for the terrain. Controlled traction beats wheel speed every time.

Of all the off-road skills I've learned over the years, airing down tires provides one of the biggest improvements for the least amount of effort. Better traction, a smoother ride, increased control, and less stress on your Jeep make it a habit worth learning before every trail ride.

FAQ Section

How much should I air down my tires for off-roading?

Most off-roaders air down between 12–20 PSI, depending on terrain, tire size, and vehicle weight.

Is airing down bad for your tires?

No — when done properly and reinflated afterward, airing down actually reduces tire damage by improving traction and control.

Do I need to air down on gravel roads?

Yes, lightly airing down on long gravel roads improves comfort, traction, and reduces washboarding.

Can I air down stock Jeep Tires?

Yes. Even stock Jeep tires benefit from airing down on gravel roads, dirt roads, rocks, snow, and sand.

Do I need beadlock wheels to air down?

No. Most Jeep owners safely air down standard wheels. Beadlocks simply allow even lower pressures.

How do I know if I've aired down too much?

If the tire sidewall appears excessively compressed or the tire feels unstable, pressure may be too low for your setup.

Should I air down for forest roads?

Many Jeep owners reduce tire pressure slightly on long gravel or forest roads to improve comfort and traction.

Bucket List: Embracing the E-Bike Revolution

A Thrilling Ride Along the Pacific Coast

Passenger on eBike with my niece

While visiting my niece, we had the opportunity to ride her e-bike. The experience was so much fun I decided to add owning an e-bike to my bucket list.

We rode a trail along the Pacific Coast of California. The views were amazing and we were able to ride for miles.

    Pacific Coast

    The Solution to Urban Congestion

E-bikes are becoming more and more popular with the ever-growing urban congestion and environmental concerns. The electric bicycle  electric bicycle solution is gaining momentum. Not only do they allow for eco-friendly travel, but you also have the flexibility of finding parking spots in bigger cities.

What Does a Trail Guide Do in Overlanding & Off-Roading?

    Navigating the Off-Road Adventure

Quick Answer: What Is a Trail Guide?

A trail guide is the person responsible for safely leading, coordinating, and supporting a group of off-roaders or overlanders on a trail. Their role includes route planning, obstacle spotting, communication, emergency preparedness, environmental stewardship, and ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

Trail guiding is a leadership role that requires experience, preparation, and strong situational awareness.

In the world of overlanding and off-roading, the trail guide is the one person everyone relies on. Whether you’re leading a multi-day overland trip with several rigs or spotting a fellow Jeeper over a single obstacle, being a trail guide is a big responsibility.

Before you decide to guide others, it’s important to understand what the role truly involves.

My Jeep on an overland adventure in Wyoming.
    Jeeps on the Oregon Trail

What Are the Main Responsibilities of a Trail Guide?

    1. How Does a Trail Guide Keep Everyone Safe?

Safety is the trail guide’s top priority.

A guide assesses trail conditions, identifies risks, and helps drivers choose proper techniques for obstacles. This includes advising when to use recovery gear, when to bypass obstacles, and when to stop altogether.

    Good trail guides:

    • Monitor driver skill levels

    • Watch weather and trail changes

    • Enforce trail etiquette

    • Prevent unnecessary vehicle damage

A Jeep stuck in the mud.
    Stuck in the mud

    2. What Emergency Gear Should a Trail Guide Carry?

Trail guides should always be equipped for emergencies.

    This includes:

    • Reliable communication devices (GMRS, ham, or satellite)

    • First aid kits

    • Recovery gear (straps, shackles, winch knowledge)

    • Emergency supplies (water, food, warmth)

Being prepared means problems don’t turn into emergencies.

    3. Why Is Communication So Important When Trail Guiding?

Clear communication keeps the group moving smoothly and safely.

    A trail guide coordinates:

    • Meeting locations

    • Trail difficulty expectations

    • Daily plans and mileage

    • Camping locations and logistics

During the trail ride, maintaining open communication ensures drivers know what’s coming next and what’s expected of them.

    4. How Does a Trail Guide Protect the Environment?

Trail guides are stewards of public land.

Promoting Tread Lightly principles is essential to preserving trails for future generations. Guides educate participants on:

    • Staying on designated trails

    • Avoiding trail widening

    • Respecting wildlife

    • Packing out everything brought in

👉 Read more: How to Protect our Public Lands

    5. How Does a Trail Guide Handle Different Vehicles and Obstacles?

    Every rig wheels differently.

    A good trail guide understands:

    • Stock vs. modified vehicles

    • 2-door vs. 4-door wheelbases

    • Lifted vs. non-lifted rigs

    • Tire size, lockers, and driver skill level

Spotting and obstacle guidance must be adjusted for each vehicle. Experience matters most on technical trails where poor decisions can lead to damage or injury.

    6. What Else Does a Trail Guide Do on Multi-Day Trips?

On longer overlanding adventures, trail guides enhance the experience by providing:

    • Trail history and local knowledge

    • Geology and ecology insights

    • Planned scenic stops

    • Shared meals or camp coordination

These extras turn a trip into a memorable adventure rather than just a drive.

Overlanders set up camp after a day of wheeling on the trails.
    Jeeps camping

Should You Become a Trail Guide?

Trail guiding isn’t about being the fastest or most modified rig on the trail — it’s about leadership, preparation, and responsibility.

    A great trail guide:

    • Puts safety first

    • Communicates clearly

    • Respects the land

    • Understands vehicles and people

    • Creates positive experiences for everyone involved

If you’re willing to step into that role thoughtfully, trail guiding can be one of the most rewarding parts of off-roading.

    Trail Guide FAQs

Is trail guiding only for experienced off-roaders?
Trail guiding requires experience, but mentorship and learning from other guides can help build skills over time.

    Do trail guides need certifications?
While not always required, training in first aid, recovery techniques, and communications is highly recommended.

Can a trail guide also be a spotter?
Yes. Spotting is often part of trail guiding, especially on technical trails.

The Digital Age's Impact on Our Lives

Our world around us is rapidly evolving, technology has transformed almost every aspect of our lives. From the way we shop to the way we communicate; the digital age has revolutionized our daily routines.

Why Wranglers are Cool shares how they can be valuable when it come time to want to trade them in. Know your Jeep's value.

    Nostalgia for Simpler Times

The automotive sector has seen a significant shift, especially in the process of buying and selling cars. Carvana, a revolutionary online platform, has emerged as a game-changer, reshaping the way we buy and sell vehicles.

    Revolutionizing the Automotive Sector

The new way of doing things can be challenging to except some days. There's a yearning within me to go back to a time from my childhood, where life seemed simpler and more comforting. But was it simpler?  Those days are gone and I need to embrace the changes. One of those changes is how we buy and sell cars.

My Son's Corvette we sold to Carvana.

    A Personal Encounter with Carvana

A couple of years ago, I had to face this change as my son decided to sell his Corvette, which I was a co-signer. He mentioned he was going to sell his car using Carvana.

I didn’t know anything about the company. I did a little research and questioned him. I had my concerns. However, my son said it the way to go. I put my trust in his research and we went for it.

    The Seamless Carvana Experience

WOW! We didn’t even have to leave the house. He filled out some information online then set up a house call. They came to our house looked at the Vette and wrote a check right there in the driveway. A few hours later a tow truck came and took the car. Easy Peasy.

My son's Corvette in the driveway!

No placing classified ads and dealing with numerous potential buyers and haggling over prices. That approach is inconvenient and often lacked trust and transparency.

The Digital Age's Impact on the Automotive Industry

Now, with the advent of the internet and the rise of e-commerce, the automotive industry has been quick to adapt. Carvana, founded in 2012, has streamlined the whole process of buying and selling cars. They have a user-friendly website and app. You can browse through their inventory at your own home. No threat of a salesman trying to pressure you into buying a car.

    Customer-Centric Approach

What sets Carvana apart from traditional dealerships is its focus on customer convenience. Once a customer finds a car they like, they can complete the entire purchasing process online, including financing and trade-ins if needed.

    A Glimpse into the Future

Though we haven’t tried out  Carvana's "Vending Machines", which are an iconic symbol of the company, the selling of our car was so simple and convenient. That process of selling the Corvette was surreal like a sci-fi movie.

It’s the way of the future I thought and I was right. It seems I need to embrace these new ways. It’s about convenience, a quick and simple process without out hassle.

That day with Carvana foreshadowed the coming future of how the digital age is reshaping industries, transforming the way we buy and sell cars.

    Wyoming Jeep Overland Adventure

Exploring the Oregon Trail in My Jeep

I was overflowing with excitement as I headed out on my inaugural Wyoming adventure in my Jeep. Destination: A stretch of the Oregon Trail nestled in the heart of Central Wyoming. I was meeting up with a group of other overland enthusiasts for a DB Overland Adventure.

    My First Wyoming Adventure

The Oregon trail is a 2,170 mile East–West trek from Independence, Missouri to the coast of Oregon. Our journey was only a mere fraction of the trail along the Sweetwater River in Wyoming.

Journey through the Sweetwater River Basin

In the 1800's the pioneers traversed the vast prairie grasslands in Kansas and Nebraska following along the Platte River into Wyoming where it met up with the Sweetwater River. That’s where we began our overland adventure. The banks of the river were high and the trail was muddy which made for a sketchy trek close to the river's edge.

Along the saturated riverbank, there were sections where a single misjudged turn of our wheels could have unleashed a torrent onto the trail. I recall moments of apprehension when I feared my Jeep might swerve in the wrong direction on the slippery, mucky terrain, potentially sending me adrift along the river's current.

A Tapestry of Colors: Wyoming's Rolling Hills

Venturing further into the trail, the rolling hills of Central Wyoming unfolded before me like a painting. With the abundant rainfall this season, the landscape exploded with vivid colors while the wildflowers flourished in full bloom.

Oregon Trail Markers: A Surreal Encounter

Along the trail, we came upon trail markers. The stone markers were etched with the words Oregon Trail and Mormon Trail, some were marked Pony Express. Seeing, in person, the Oregon Trail markers felt surreal. I learned about the subject in school and the realization of standing in the very place where history unfolded left me awestruck.

    Challenges Amidst Nature's Wrath

The pioneers on the Oregon Trail faced the wrath of Mother Nature, enduring the unforgiving elements that exacted a heavy toll on their journey. We were in our 4x4 rig so the trail wasn't nearly as difficult.

However, as the rain showers arrived in the mid-afternoon, the dusty roads transformed into a treacherous quagmire, posing significant challenges for certain vehicles on our overland expedition. At times the pace slowed, as many rigs struggled in the thick clay-like mud.

The Oregon Trail's river's course, serving as a direct route to South Pass on the Continental Divide, which was renowned as the most convenient passage across the divide. The path starts to climb in elevation once it departs from the low-lying areas surrounding the Sweetwater River. This detour is necessary to avoid the steep canyon walls that run alongside the river.

Honoring the Past: The Mormon Handcart Tragedy

We were headed to Rocky Ridge, which marked one of the most challenging sections of the pioneers' entire expedition. However, our Jeeps effortlessly conquered this rugged rocky terrain without any difficulty. Rocky Ridge is where many perished during a bitter, cold blizzard in 1856. We stopped the memorial to pay homage to those fierce, brave pioneers.

Our three day adventure included stops at the Carissa Gold Mine and the Historic South Path City. The gold mine still to this day has operational machinery. The tours were a nice break after miles and miles of mud.

    Joys of Overlanding

I am finding I enjoy overlanding. It ties all of my interests into one fun package - off-roading, camping and sightseeing without the stress of extreme rock crawling. The best part is hanging with friends, new and old, at the campfire each night reminiscing about the days events.
